Coronavirus cases continue to spike in Polk County. As of June 25, 2020, Lakeland has surpassed the 1,000 cases threshold, and Polk County alone is nearing 100 total deaths thus far. Information provided to us by our public health officials is cause to believe we may be headed toward a second shutdown if we’re unable to halt the spread of this infectious disease.

To Love Lakeland is to love your fellow Lakelander. In an effort to mitigate viral spread in our community, it’s time for us to #MaskUpLKLD! When you wear a mask, you’re not just protecting yourself and your loved ones, but the community at large. By wearing a mask, you’re putting your child, your neighbor and your friends first.

Recent studies have revealed that COVID-19 spreads through person-to-person transmission in the form of respiratory droplets produced when infected individuals cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of nearby persons, or they may be inhaled. Reports and studies on infection control state that these droplets usually travel around 6 feet (or two arms’ lengths). To effectively combat this infectious disease, let’s #MaskUpLKLD!

The #MaskUpLKLD campaign is designed to educate the public on what they can personally do to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

According to the CDC, cloth face coverings should:

  • Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • Be secured with ties or ear loops
  • Include multiple layers of fabric
  • Allow for breathing without restriction
  • Be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape
According to the CDC, social distancing, also called “physical distancing,” means maintaining space between yourself and other people outside of your home. To practice social or physical distancing:
  • Stay at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from other people
  • Do not gather in groups
  • Stay out of crowded places and avoid mass gatherings
  • Schedule virtual meetings whenever possible to make it easier to stay connected while avoiding social gatherings

According to the CDC, if you need to shop for food or medicine at the grocery store or pharmacy, try to stay at least 6 feet away from others. Also consider these options:

  • Use mail-order for medications, if possible.
  • Consider a grocery delivery service.

Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face covering when around others, including when you have to go out in public, for example to the grocery store.

  • Cloth face coverings should NOT be placed on children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
  • Keep at least 6 feet between yourself and others, even when you wear a face covering.
  • Avoid gatherings of any size outside your household, such as a friend’s house, parks, restaurants, shops, or any other place.
  • Schedule virtual meetings whenever possible to make it easier to stay connected while avoiding social gatherings.

This advice applies to people of any age, including teens and younger adults. Children should not have in-person playdates while school is out. To help maintain social connections while social distancing, learn tips to keep children healthy while school’s out.
